Zambia advances copper mining with electric trucks

Zambia has received a consignment of 31 fully electric mining trucks from China, signaling a major step forward in modernizing its copper mining sector while embracing environmentally sustainable practices.

The trucks, produced by the Chinese technology firm Breton Technology, will be deployed in a large-scale copper mining operation and operated by the African arm of the China 15th Metallurgical Construction Group, a state-owned enterprise. This marks the first time such a large batch of electric mining trucks has been delivered at once for use in an African mining project, according to Li Wenjie, a senior official with the Chinese construction group’s African division.

Smart technologies
The initiative is expected to significantly upgrade Zambia’s mining equipment, reflecting a broader strategy to integrate smart technologies and reduce carbon emissions in the sector. Breton Technology’s head of overseas business, Teng Fei, highlighted the trucks’ advanced features, including smart sensors and automation capabilities. The vehicles are supported by an intelligent fleet management system designed to optimize performance through digital displays and software platforms, enhancing both productivity and efficiency.

Zambia’s shift to electric-powered machinery comes as the country looks to expand copper production while minimizing its environmental impact. In 2023, the country’s economy grew by 4%, fueled in part by a resurgence in copper output, which reached over 820,000 tons. The mining sector continues to be a cornerstone of Zambia’s economy, generating vital export revenue and employment
