Maputo Port Sets New Records in Cargo and Rail Handling

The Port of Maputo has achieved unprecedented operational milestones, marking a strong recovery and solidifying its position as a key regional logistics hub.

According to Neusa Monjane Saranga, Commercial Director of Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC), July volumes exceeded all expectations. The port handled 1,523,041.64 tonnes, breaking the previous record of 1,361,905.71 tonnes set in August 2024 — an 11.8% increase.

Rail operations also reached new heights, with 370,523.99 tonnes transported, driven by bulk commodities such as chromium, ferrochrome, phosphate, vanadium, and granite. “A total of 35 trains were received in a single week – an unprecedented achievement,” Saranga noted. On July 20, the port recorded its highest-ever daily throughput of 80,492.76 tonnes.

Further records came from Grindrod Logistics at the Terminal de Carvão da Matola (TCM), the port’s dry bulk terminal. In August, TCM tipped 566 wagons within 24 hours, setting a new benchmark for offloading efficiency.

These milestones highlight Maputo’s growing role in southern Africa’s supply chains, reinforcing its importance for regional trade and bulk commodity exports.
